Spurs’ quest to dodge relegation continues as Seagulls eye European berth

Georginio Rutter struck a late equaliser as Tottenham drew with Brighton, missing the chance to escape the relegation zone. Pedro Porro opened the scoring in the first-half but his strike was cancelled out before the break by a superb volley from Kaoru Mitoma. A nervy second half seemed to have been settled, though, as Xavi Simons curled a superb effort beyond Verbruggen, and Spurs saw out the lead to claim three points at home for just the third time this season.

Rutter then lashed one beyond Antonin Kinsky to restore parity late in added time, bringing an eerie silence down on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It brings to an end an impressive winning run for Brighton, who had won five of their previous six matches.

A win would have been enough to lift Spurs out of the relegation zone at least until West Ham visit Crystal Palace on Monday night, but they will remain in the bottom three for the time being.
