Tottenham wanted Rasmus Hojlund but he preferred Man Utd | OneFootball

England international striker Harry Kane left Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window, and the club did not sign a like-for-like replacement.

Spurs brought in Wales international attacker Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest, but according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, they initially had Denmark international striker Rasmus Hojlund as their top target to replace Kane.

“Paris Saint-Germain also tried to enter the race, but the deal was never going to happen because Hojlund was already close to Manchester United,” he wrote in his exclusive column for CaughtOffside.

“But there was also another English club and that club, from what I’m hearing, was Tottenham.

“They wanted to be informed on the conditions of the deal, but it was not possible for them at that time because Harry Kane was not sold yet to Bayern Munich – Hojlund’s arrival depended on Kane’s sale, but that only happened later in the window.

“Again, though, the player’s stance was ‘let me focus on United because that’s my dream move’.”

Described by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as a ‘huge talent’, the 20-year-old finally made his debut for the Red Devils against the Gunners on Sunday having been unavailable since his arrival due to a back injury.

He scored ten goals in 34 games during his only season with Atalanta before moving to the Premier League.

The former Copenhagen striker bagged 12 goals in 21 games for Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz before his move to Serie A.

Hojlund is not a prolific scorer yet, but the speedster is expected to become one and has been widely compared with Manchester City hitman Erling Braut Haaland.

However, whether he has what it takes to excel in England remains to be seen, and Tottenham are unlikely to be beating themselves up over his decision to join Man United.

Johnson bagged ten goals and weighed in with three assists in 44 games last term and is a top player.

Tottenham have got themselves a versatile forward who is very much capable of delivering the goods, and manager Ange Postecoglou has no regrets about the signings he made this summer.

The club have started life without Kane on an impressive note, with three wins and a draw in their opening four Premier League games.

They will be keen to keep improving and challenge for major silverware this term.
