Tottenham Hotspur’s survival fight could be lifted by the returns of Mohamed Kudus, Rodrigo Bentancur and Mathys Tel for the trip to Sunderland on April 12. With seven games left, only a point, and a sizeable goal difference, separates Spurs and West Ham in the bottom three.
Following a mutual split with Igor Tudor, Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange are leading the hunt for a new head coach. According to football.london, Spurs aim to appoint within the next few days and are in advanced talks with Roberto De Zerbi, who left Marseille earlier this season and is increasingly open to a deal.
If De Zerbi were to take charge, he would have just under a fortnight to bed in at Hotspur Way before Sunderland. Spurs are keen to have someone in place to welcome back internationals and shape preparations for the North East.
Kudus has been sidelined by a hamstring problem since January and is yet to return. Before the Nottingham Forest game this month, Tudor indicated the winger could rejoin partial first-team training before April. Bentancur, who had hamstring surgery in January, has been making encouraging progress.
Tel suffered a knock in the defeat by Forest before the international break and withdrew from France Under-21 duty. Sunderland may fancy their chances after a Tyne-Wear derby win, but Spurs could have the trio available. James Maddison is also working towards a possible late-season return after rejoining first-team training.
