Toulouse: Five Great Free Kicks

Article image:Toulouse: Five Great Free Kicks

Vincent Sierro scored a wonderful free-kick against Monaco last weekend to earn a vital win for Les Violets near the bottom of the table. We take a look at where his strike stacks up in TFC’s archive of goals from free-kicks through the years.

“I did a bit of theatre to pretend to cross," said Toulouse goalscorer Vincent Sierro with a smile after Toulouse's victory over Monaco (1-2). “In my head, I knew I was going to hit the near post, hard, so that he wouldn't come back on it, and that worked for me.”

Instead of a perfectly-struck long-range effort which rocketed into the back of the net, Sierro scored from a smart strike from range that caught out Monaco goalkeeper Phillip Köhn, feigning to cross before delivering a low curled effort past the German goalkeeper. So where does it stack up in terms of Toulouse free-kicks?

Branco van den Boomen vs Paris Saint-Germain (2022-2023)

The Dutchman stunned the Parc des Princes with this precise strike against PSG last season. Les Violets would end up losing the game 2-1 after goals from Hakimi and Lionel Messi.

Rhys Healey vs Guingamp (2020-2021)

The Englishman was on fire in his first season in Ligue 2 BKT, and this strike was perfectly placed into the top corner to score his third goal in three matches (he would go on to score 20 goals that season for TFC).

Branco van den Boomen vs Dunkerque (2021-2022)

Another special from Van den Booman, this time coming in a Ligue 2 BKT clash against Dunkerque (2-0) during TFC’s promotion season. The Dutchman’s sweetly struck free-kick flies into the top corner, no chance for the goalkeeper.

Jeremy Mathieu vs Valenciennes (2007-2008)

It’s a free-kick strike from an unlikely source, but Jeremy Mathieu did indeed score from his low strike on goal in a win (2-1) which meant Toulouse secured their Ligue 1 status for another season.
