Tragedy strikes at match in Indonesia with at least 174 confirmed dead | OneFootball

Clashes between fans and police during a match between Arema and Persebaya Surabaya in Indonesia have seen at least 174 people killed.

According to local reports, thousands of Arema fans went on to the pitch after their team lost the game 3-2.

Then, it’s claimed that a riot broke out with police firing tear gas into the crowd, a method of crowd control that has been outlawed by FIFA regulations.

More than 300 people were said to have been rushed to hospital, and the current death toll of 174 is expected to rise in the coming days.

If figures are correct, this is one of the world’s worst stadium disasters, with a local health official claiming many of the victims had died of “chaos, overcrowding, trampling and suffocation.”

Indonesia’s chief security minister posted on social media that the stadium had been filled beyond capacity, as he professed that 42,000 had been sold for a stadium that should hold 38,000.

President Joko Widodo has declared that all football in Indonesia will be suspended for a week, with Arema banned from hosting games at their Kanjuruhan Stadium for at least the rest of the season.
