Rav van den Berg's future at Middlesbrough is currently up in the air
Koln are in discussion with Middlesbrough for a deal for Rav van den Berg this summer.
According to Sky Sports (12.41), the German club made an initial proposal last week that is still under consideration by the Championship side.
Van den Berg made the switch to the Riverside from PEC Zwolle in the 2023 summer transfer window, and has been a key figure in the side since.
The 21-year-old has featured 61 times in the Championship for Middlesbrough, contributing one goal, with the team coming eighth and 10th in the table across those two seasons.
Middlesbrough are reportedly weighing up an offer from Koln for Van den Berg.
Boro have previously rejected two offers from Feyenoord for the defender, but could now accept this bid from the Bundesliga outfit.
It remains to be seen what kind of figure it will take to convince the Teesside outfit to cash in on the 21-year-old.
Van den Berg has a contract keeping him at the Riverside until the summer of 2027, meaning there is no immediate need to cash in this month.
But it’s believed that Koln’s offer is still under consideration, with the defender not featuring in Rob Edwards’ side last weekend in their pre-season friendly against Deportivo de la Coruña.
It’s understood that Feyenoord have moved onto other defensive targets after being unable to convince Middlesbrough to sell the Dutchman.
Middlesbrough have been relatively quiet this summer compared to their Championship rivals, bringing in two signings so far.
Abdoulaye Kanté has joined from Ligue 2 side Troyes to bolster the team’s midfield options, while Alfie Jones has been signed from Hull City.
Boro also appointed Edwards as manager as a replacement for Michael Carrick after the team finished 10th in the table.
The club’s Championship season will begin on Saturday with a clash against Swansea City.
Van den Berg has been a standout performer at the back for Middlesbrough since joining, and it’s not surprising he’s attracting interest this summer.
Boro should be holding out for a significant fee in order to sell the centre-back, who could be a great fit for Edwards this season if he stays.
It would be a real blow for the Teesside outfit to lose yet another key player in the transfer market, especially if Hayden Hackney also goes.
If Middlesbrough want to push for promotion this year, then holding onto talents of this calibre will be necessary.
