The Tractor Boys’ three new additions in midfield may well put the future of Jack Taylor into doubt.

Ipswich Town have had an underwhelming start to their 2025-26 Championship season but will be hopeful that they can rise up the table with some consistent form.

The Tractor Boys had been winless from their opening four league games, drawing against Birmingham City, Southampton and Derby County, while tasting defeat at Deepdale against Preston North End.

But last week, Kieran McKenna’s men claimed their first victory of the campaign in ruthless fashion, dispatching Sheffield United 5-0 at Portman Road, with the hope such an impressive performance can inspire them to complete similar routs in the coming weeks.

This leaves Ipswich 14th in the second-tier table after five games, three points off the play-offs, although the target will be to get in contention for automatic promotion come May 2026.

Over the course of the summer transfer window, the Suffolk-based outfit recruited 11 new faces, with an emphasis on bolstering the midfield department through the captures of Jens Cajuste, Marcelino Nunez and Azor Matusiwa.

With three new options battling for a starting spot, it has potentially pushed Jack Taylor further down the pecking order, who will suffer a reduction of minutes and may be considering an exit away during the January transfer window.

Ipswich Town’s stacked options in midfield

Ahead of their season opener against Birmingham City, there was a real concern about the lack of depth in the middle of the park due to the exits of Kalvin Phillips, Jens Cajuste, Massimo Luongo and Sam Morsy.

This left only Azor Matusiwa, Jack Taylor and Cameron Humphreys as midfield options at St Andrew’s, but since then it is looking a lot healthier, with a wealth of senior figures for Kieran McKenna to choose from.

Cajuste has since returned to Portman Road on another season-long loan deal from Napoli, taking on his maiden season in the Championship after establishing himself in their top-flight set-up – making 30 appearances.

Meanwhile, Matusiwa arrived for a reported fee of £7.8m, a sizeable investment for a Championship team, possessing impressive experience across Europe with Ajax, Groningen, Rangers, Reims and Rennes.

Nunez switched allegiances from Norwich to Ipswich over the course of the summer too, showcasing his immense talents in the second-tier over three seasons at Carrow Road, registering his best return rate last term with six goals and four assists from 32 games.

It will take the Chilean a bit of time to settle into his new surroundings, but he is set to be a vital cog in the Ipswich machine to help deliver immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

Jack Taylor’s future at Ipswich Town is in serious doubt

Jack Taylor has been an important player for Ipswich since joining the club in the summer of 2023.

He put a promotion to the top-flight on his CV in 2023-24 by playing 33 games, and was then trusted to remain part of the first-team squad for the step-up in class to the Premier League, playing 32 times and scoring once.

There is no doubt he is such a talented individual, with his technically gifted skills paired with his physical presence allowing him to stamp his authority on a midfield line, but he isn’t in the best team that can guarantee him regular minutes with all of these midfielders added to the mix.

As a Republic of Ireland international too, Taylor will be desperate for regular league action to continue playing for his country, and as he is likely to be the fourth-choice midfielder, he will be limited to small cameos off the bench – something that he shouldn’t be doing at this level of football in particular.

He has the attributes to play a leading role in a fellow Championship side and lead them to success, and it should be something he desperately pushes for leading into January as he has to keep his career going on an upwards trajectory.

It is a real shame that it isn’t working out at Ipswich because of his qualities, but that is the nature of football, and another side in the division should be available to offer him a starring role and allow him to play his part in a promotion campaign.

Because of the appeal of this, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Taylor become one of Ipswich’s first outgoings during the January transfer window, and there should be many suitors hunting down for his signature, as he has the attributes to be a fabulous asset and help make their midfield line much stronger.
