The Trophée des champions 2023, the French football season’s traditional curtain-raiser, is set to take place in Bangkok, Thailand, after two successive editions in Israel. The decision was officially confirmed by the Ligue de football professionnel (LFP) on Thursday.
The match will be held on August 5th at the National Stadium of Rajamangala, which has a seating capacity of 51,552. The Trophée des champions has been held in Asia on three previous occasions, in Beijing in 2014 and in Shenzhen in 2018 and 2019.
The LFP’s decision to hold the match in Bangkok is aimed at creating a significant event around French football in Southeast Asia, where an estimated 400 million football fans exist. The organization also hopes to fill the famous National Stadium of Rajamangala.
The Trophée des champions has been played since 1995 and pits the winners of the Ligue 1 and Coupe de France against each other. The 2022 edition of the match took place in Israel between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Nantes.
