Anatoliy Trubin’s last-second header against Real Madrid sent Benfica into the Champions League play-off, placing them in the top 24, and knocked Marseille out on goal difference.

Roberto de Zerbi’s side had already been damaged by a 3-0 defeat in Belgium to Club Brugge. According to Glorioso 1904, the Jan Breydel Stadium screens then showed an erroneous message congratulating Marseille on reaching the play-off.

Trubin said he initially did not understand what was required, heard Tomás Araújo and António Silva urging him, then saw the manager telling him to go forward. He went into the box and called it a crazy moment, his first goal at the age of 24.

The strike was historic, making him only the seventh goalkeeper to score in a Champions League match across both the current and previous formats.

Before the Ukraine international, Provedel, Pantalic, Butt, Piot, Enyeama and Bolat had achieved the feat.
