The head of the Football Association (FA) has confirmed that Thomas Tuchel’s future as England manager is not fully guaranteed.

The German manager has a performance clause in his contract that allows England to cut him loose early if he fails to deliver at the World Cup.

Tuchel initially took charge of England in January 2025, then signed a two-year contract extension in February that runs until the end of the 2028 European Championship.

It looks like a long-term commitment on paper, but FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has made it clear that the deal still comes with strict expectations attached.

Bullingham explained that the FA did not simply reward Tuchel with a long contract without conditions.

“There are performance clauses in every single contract with the FA, right?” he said (via The Times).

“I’m not going to go into any detail on what they are. I’m just not going to go there. And the reality is, we’re really confident he’s going to be our coach in 2028.”

Tuchel’s contract clause makes it clear that while the FA wants an air of stability, they won’t hesitate to act if he doesn’t deliver success.

The initial target set for the former Chelsea manager when he first arrived on an 18-month deal was to deliver the second World Cup title in England’s history.

That expectation has not changed as the Three Lions prepare to kick off their World Cup campaign against Croatia.

Bullingham also addressed concerns that success at the tournament could make Tuchel a target for other clubs or national teams.

Tuchel, who guided Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021, remains highly regarded across Europe. However, Bullingham insisted the FA is in a strong position to keep him.

“We can hold him to that contract,” he added, making it clear that England would not easily lose their manager even if outside interest grows.
