Cádiz forward Lucas Pérez was handed counterfeit cash totalling 340,000 euros for a luxury car and valuables. The National Police have also identified several other suspects.
According to Europa Press, the investigation began in February after the Galician striker reported being defrauded while trying to sell clothing, jewellery, watches and a high-end car. The former Deportivo de La Coruña, Arsenal and West Ham player valued the lot at 340,000 euros, 180,000 for the vehicle and the rest for the other items.
Marca reported the goods included four luxury watches, three gold and diamond rings and nine items of clothing.
Europa Press said the parties met twice, first to view the items and then to complete payment. At the second meeting the buyers handed over a bag of cash, most of it counterfeit. Back home, Pérez found only a tiny portion were legal tender.
After inquiries, officers identified the suspected fraudsters. Two 29-year-old men, one French and one Belgian, were arrested on 11 March at a hotel in the capital, while others were identified in connection with the case.
