Many of FC Barcelona’s players were away on international duty with their respective nations as they looked to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The usual suspects like Spain, Portugal, Germany, France and England booked their berths for next year’s marquee event.
One player who looked close to qualifying for the World Cup but failed to do so at the last minute is Andreas Christensen. Denmark suffered a demoralising defeat to Scotland to be pushed into the play-offs, where he joins Robert Lewandowski and Roony Bardghji.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Lewandowski and Bardghji could end up facing each other for a potential 2026 World Cup berth. They have been paired on the same side of the draw and only one of them will make it to America, if at all.
Poland face Albania at home in the semi-finals, while Sweden will have to overcome Ukraine. Should the two teams emerge victorious in their respective ties, it would result in a final between them and one of the two players would progress to the World Cup.
Lewandowski and Roony are at opposite ends of their careers. This is likely to be the Pole’s last run at a World Cup. He will be 38 by the time the tournament comes around and will want to give his all to make it to the United States.
Roony, on the other hand, is just breaking into the senior Sweden team. He is not a regular starter yet and, despite all the talent they have, the team have not been playing at a high level. The 20-year-old will hope to contribute in some capacity to lead his nation to the marquee tournament.
