Two Barcelona players take new numbers for 2026-27 season

Barcelona are gearing up for the start of the 2026-27 season, which gets underway for them next weekend with a trip to Elche. Hansi Flick’s side have not had the greatest preparation up until this point due to several of their players only just returning after their involvement at the 2026 World Cup, and one of those was Joan Garcia.

He may not have played a single minute in North America, but Garcia walked away with a winner’s medal after Spain defeated Argentina in last month’s final. It was just reward for the 25-year-old, who earned his inclusion in the 26-man squad after a string of impressive performances during his first season as a Barcelona player.

Garcia is the undisputed starter at Barcelona, and that will now be reflected by his squad number. As per MD, he has taken the number 1 jersey that was recently made available when Marc-Andre ter Stegen joined Ajax on a season-long loan.

Szczesny also changes squad number

Garcia vacates the number 13 in order to take 1, but that jersey will be taken for the 2026-27 season. Wojciech Szczesny, who will be Barcelona’s backup for the second year in a row, takes it, giving up the number 25 in the process.

In the coming days, more information will come out regarding any further squad number changes. New signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi will make their picks, and one of them could take the 7 jersey, which will soon be vacated by Ferran Torres as he nears a move to Paris Saint-Germain. Robert Lewandowski’s exit means that 9 is available (likely to the new striker that could be signed soon), while Szczesny’s move to 13 means that the 25 is also an option – as is 14 following Marcus Rashford’s return to Manchester United at the end of the 2026-27.
