Despite being 36 years of age, the FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski is enjoying a second youth this season, as he is once again putting up numbers that can rival his best seasons.
The arrival of Hansi Flick on the Blaugrana bench has clearly benefitted the veteran Pole, who is not only leading the scoring chart in La Liga but is also one of the top scorers in the top five European leagues this season, having scored 32 goals across all competitions.
While he still remains one of the deadliest strikers in Europe, Mundo Deportivo notes that there is one particular situation from which he is almost guaranteed to score, i.e., from the penalty spot.
Lewandowski took his tally of penalties scored this season to 7 against Rayo Vallecano, as he put the ball into the back of the net from the spot after the referee had awarded his team a penalty for a foul on Inigo Martinez.
In total, he has taken 8 penalties this season and thus missed only one, i.e., in the game against Villarreal, when the Blaugranes were already 3 goals ahead on the scoreboard and ended up winning 5-1. In that game, the Pole was successful in deceiving the goalkeeper, Diego Conde, but the ball went out after hitting the left post.
This was only the second penalty the Pole had missed in his entire Barcelona career. The first miss was in his first season at the Catalan club, as he missed his first penalty in a match against Almeria that ended 2-0 in the Blaugrana side’s favor. This match is more easily memorable as it was Gerard Pique’s farewell at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Thus, Lewandowski has scored 13 of the total 15 penalties he has taken since signing for Barcelona, boasting a success rate of 86% in this regard. Throughout his career for club and country, the Pole has scored 88 penalties and missed only 10.
