Joe Gomez’s position at Liverpool once again became a major transfer talking point as Football Insider reported late deadline day interest from multiple clubs. According to senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke, both Brighton and Crystal Palace explored a last-ditch move for the versatile defender.
“Sources have told Football Insider that both Palace and their rivals Brighton had explored a last-ditch deal for Gomez, only for the 28-year-old to stay at Anfield after Liverpool failed to sign Guehi,” O’Rourke revealed.
Liverpool’s headline-grabbing £125million move for Alexander Isak dominated the final hours of the window. Yet, while Arne Slot’s side turned their attention to Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, that deal ultimately fell through. This failure left Gomez in place, with AC Milan also noted as admirers.
“There’ll be a lot of dominoes to fall potentially, for Joe Gomez to leave Anfield,” O’Rourke stated on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast. “The thing is with Joe Gomez is that he’s happy at Liverpool, he’s in no rush to leave.”
With Guehi’s contract at Selhurst Park winding down, Football Insider reported he could be available for around £25million in January. This situation could reopen the Gomez question. Palace’s contingency planning, as O’Rourke explained, revolved around Guehi’s possible departure.

“It’s no surprise that clubs like AC Milan were looking at Gomez – they were looking to bring in a new centre-back,” O’Rourke added. “There was even interest from Brighton late on in the window and Palace had him on their list as well if they did lose Guehi.”
Liverpool’s rebuild under Arne Slot has been nothing short of seismic. Nine new arrivals, eight departures, and nearly £600million spent has reshaped the squad. With record-breaking deals for Isak (£125m) and Florian Wirtz (£116m), continuity through squad players like Gomez could prove invaluable.
From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, Joe Gomez’s situation feels finely balanced. On one hand, the club is in the middle of a huge evolution, and keeping experienced squad players is crucial for stability. Gomez’s versatility – able to cover both centre-back and full-back – makes him an asset in a squad undergoing such major change.
On the other hand, the reports of Crystal Palace and Brighton circling cannot be ignored. Gomez is no longer guaranteed regular starts, especially with Liverpool targeting Marc Guehi again in January. For fans, this raises a key question: is it better to cash in now, or trust Gomez to play a bigger role as fixtures pile up?
There’s also the sense that AC Milan’s interest adds weight to his profile. A move abroad could revitalise his career, but many supporters would argue Gomez still has unfinished business at Anfield. His loyalty, combined with his ability to slot in when needed, gives Slot options that a new signing might not immediately provide.
If Guehi does arrive in January, the domino effect O’Rourke mentioned could accelerate. For now, fans are likely to welcome Gomez’s presence, especially with Liverpool fighting on multiple fronts. His future may hinge not only on transfer activity but also on his own performances in the coming months.
