Many Serie A teams are exploring the January transfer market to bolster their title chances, European qualification possibilities, and survival hopes.

The loan market is an option for clubs willing to strengthen their teams while determining whether a permanent signing would be a good move, and both Lecce and Torino are reportedly interested in Rangers’ Welsh winger Rabbi Matondo.

Both Serie A sides are considered by the top licensed and non Gamstop bookies as being embroiled in the relegation battle, with Lecce the more likely of the two to drop to Serie B.

Despite being priced by most bookmakers at around 2/1 to go down, Lecce is only the fourth favourite, with Monza and Venezia both odds on, and Parma is also regarded as being more likely to be relegated.

Torino, who sit just one place and two points above Lecce, are considered relative outsiders to go down, priced at 20/1.

With both teams having plenty to fight for and struggling with minus goal differences, the addition of a dynamic forward with pace and the ability to score and create goals could make all the difference.

Since joining Rangers in the summer of 2022 for approximately £3m, the speedy winger has struggled with fitness, managing just 44 league appearances.

In his time with the Scottish giants, he has chipped in with seven goals and nine assists, with his most memorable contribution being a wonder goal against bitter rivals Celtic.

His ability to cut in from either wing and chip in with valuable goals and assists is something most teams would be interested in, and a short-term loan deal could be in the best interests of everyone involved.

Matondo needs minutes on the pitch, Lecce and Torino need players who can help them get points on the board, and Rangers will be keen to reduce their wage bill.

Matondo is reported to earn around £23,000 per week on his current deal, more than Rangers will want to pay for someone not in the first team.

Ideally, Rangers would prefer to sell the player, but a loan deal with a future fee should the move prove to be successful. An amount of around £2m would suit all parties, and the chance for the player to show what he can do for the rest of the season will make him a more saleable asset.

Both teams have struggled to score or create goals, with Torino’s Ché Adams leading the way for them with five goals and two assists in 19 games. Duván Zapata has managed three goals in just seven appearances, but he’ll remain out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Lecce’s Nikola Krstovic is the club’s leading scorer with six from 20 appearances.

If Matondo does make the move, he will be confident about making an impact with either side and could also alert other clubs to his availability.
