Two sides of the same coin: The story of a dark coincidence linking Benzema and En-Nesyri

Star names and tidy numbers have not settled the case for Karim Benzema and Youssef En-Nesyri. According to Goal.com, exits looked likely, only for timing and a stubborn market to keep both in place.

Benzema left Al-Ittihad for Al-Hilal in what was billed as a major attacking upgrade, while Al-Ittihad swiftly signed En-Nesyri to fill the gap. Criticism shadowed both and exit talk grew, but clubs resisted releasing a foreign striker without a replacement.

Benzema posted nine goals and five assists in 13 matches, 14 goal contributions in all. The gripe was timing, as he failed to impose himself against Al-Ittihad and did not deliver decisive displays versus Al-Nassr or Al-Ahli.

He could not take Al-Hilal beyond the round of 16 in the AFC Champions League Elite, and the league push did little to change opinions.

En-Nesyri arrived to offset Benzema’s exit but did not bridge the gap. He played 18 matches for Al-Ittihad, scoring eight, and he failed to score against Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr or Al-Ahli. He was on the pitch for a quarter-final exit in the AFC Champions League Elite.

With confidence waning, both clubs explored a split. No suitable replacements have emerged and, with the season looming, departures have been shelved. The likeliest outcome is that both start the campaign.

Keeping them does not erase reservations, it reflects time pressure. The new season could allow them to reset, but they must deliver when matches demand a big striker. Whether form restores reputations or prompts fresh solutions remains open.
