Two years after leaving Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp named Germany head coach until 2030 | OneFootball

Jürgen Klopp has returned to the dugout, appointed Germany head coach until 2030 with a brief to revive the Nationalmannschaft.

The German federation announced the move on Friday. He succeeds Julian Nagelsmann after the 2026 World Cup round-of-32 defeat by Paraguay, 1-1 then 3-4 on penalties.

After leaving Anfield in 2024, Klopp served as Red Bull’s global director of football. At 59, this is his first national-team post.

His staff will include Pep Lijnders, his long-time Liverpool lieutenant who worked with Pep Guardiola at City last season, Peter Krawietz, another former Liverpool assistant, and Sven Bender, the ex-Germany midfielder who played for Dortmund.

The task is sizeable. Since lifting the trophy in Brazil in 2014, Germany have not reached the last 16 at a World Cup. At the past two Euros they failed to go beyond the quarter-finals, including at home in 2024.

Klopp’s first test is away to the Netherlands in the Nations League on 24 September at 20:45.
