Manchester United youngster Tyler Fletcher has opened up on the emotions he was going through as he made his senior debut in Saturday’s 2-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur.
Tyler came on in place of Kobbie Mainoo in the dying embers of the triumph over Thomas Frank’s Tottenham side.
United clinched all three points courtesy of strikes in either half from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes. With the win secured and the visitors reduced to 10 men after Cuti Romero was given his marching orders during the opening 45 minutes for a reckless challenge on Casemiro, Michael Carrick thrust Tyler into the action.
It was a steady cameo for Fletcher, who completed all seven passes that he attempted. He follows in the footsteps of his twin brother, Jack Fletcher, who also made his debut in December last year.
Tyler becomes United’s 258th Academy graduate.
After the final whistle, he spoke to MUTV and revealed his delight at the outstanding achievement.
He said, “It’s a mad day. I’m absolutely buzzing. The best day of my life, it’s a dream come true. I’ve just got to thank everyone for supporting me, throughout the way.”
“It’s an honour to have one of those [Academy] numbers. Not many people do it. I’m grateful it’s happened. To get to go on the pitch and play at Old Trafford, it’s a special feeling.”
The debutant added, “I found out I was in the squad yesterday, after the session. I got told you will be with the first team, you’ll be on the bench. I was buzzing with that.”
“I was warming up in the last five minutes and five minutes got added on. I got the call and I was like, ‘No way is this happening’. I got told to go and enjoy it and make as many passes as you can, get as many touches as you can, and that’s what I did.”
Asked what Carrick was spotted telling him on the touchline, Tyler added, “He [Carrick] just said enjoy it. Make the most of the moment. Go and get on the ball and do what you do, try to get as many touches as I can when I was on there, so I was trying to get little bounce passes, little short ones, just to get a few touches. That is what he said.”
“That’s the best moment of my career so far. I don’t think anything can top it. It’s a special moment for my family. I think my mum is here, my brother is here. My dad has got a game so he couldn’t make it.”
“It’s an unbelievable moment.”
United are next in action on Tuesday when they go away to West Ham.
