Tyne and Wear derby: police escort for Sunderland fans and zero-tolerance warning

Sunderland fans will be police-escorted from Newcastle Central Station to St James’ Park for Sunday’s Tyne and Wear derby, with a zero-tolerance warning for would-be troublemakers. According to Sunderland Echo, a multi-agency plan is in place to manage the event.

For safety reasons, the Sunderland escort leaves Central Station at 10.15am. Late arrivals may have to wait for a second escort, risking missing the 12pm kick-off, so fans are urged to arrive early.

The plan mirrors December 2025’s reverse fixture in Sunderland, which the Black Cats won 1-0. Pre-booked coaches are unaffected and will arrive at and depart from St James’ Park.

Public transport runs a Sunday service and will be very busy, so allow extra time. There are no trains between Durham or Darlington and Newcastle because of engineering work, with limited rail replacement.

Road closures around Central Station, St James Boulevard and Barrack Road will support the escort and coach movements. A larger police presence and cordons will operate in and around the ground, with additional officers in both city centres.

Northumbria Police want the occasion enjoyed safely with minimal disruption and warn that anyone seeking disorder faces robust action, including prosecution and potential football banning orders, with clubs able to act further.

Newcastle leader Karen Kilgour urged fans to follow advice and keep rivalries on the pitch, while Sunderland leader Michael Mordey hoped for three points and a safe, positive day.
