A second-half Emily Murphy double and a goal from Deanna Cooper gave the Lasses a 3-1 victory in Sunday's Tyne-Wear clash at St. James' Park.

And the attendance of 18,972 was the highest of the weekend across WSL (Women's Super League) and WSL2 - and the biggest women's derby.

Manchester City Women beat Manchester United Women in front of 17,520 on Saturday while Tottenham Hotspur Women faced Arsenal Women in the North London derby on Sunday, but neither could match the turnout on Tyneside.

It was another impressive illustration of the Newcastle United Women fan base; last season, the Magpies set a new record WSL2 attendance of 38,502, also against Sunderland. They also hold the highest attendances at tier three and tier four of the women's game.

The attendance of 18,972 also means United are second only to Arsenal Women, who have boasted several impressive crowds this term, in terms of the biggest home gate so far in the women's game in 2025/26.

Sunday's victory saw United climb to fourth in the table and maintain their unbeaten record in competitive fixtures at St. James' Park.

Anna Tamminen saved a penalty on her debut before Cooper struck and substitute Murphy's brace sealed the three points for Newcastle.
