Morocco has qualified for the final of the U20 World Cup after their victory over France (1-1, 5-4 on penalties) on Wednesday night in Chile.

This is the sixth time an African team has reached the final of the tournament. In the previous five occasions, Nigeria lost twice, as did Ghana, but the Black Satellites eventually managed to clinch the title in 2009.

Gessime Yassine and his teammates have shone throughout the tournament, both offensively and defensively, defeating major footballing nations such as Spain, Brazil, the United States, and France.

This performance brings back memories of Ghana’s brilliant run at the 2009 edition, held in Egypt. Back then, André Ayew and his young teammates made it all the way to the final and overcame Brazil (0-0, 4-3 on penalties).

Now, against Argentina, the Young Lions will try to emulate Ghana, the only African team to have ever been crowned champions, and deliver a performance that will go down in the continent’s footballing history.
