UEFA has provided an update on the controversy involving Gianluca Prestianni and Vinicius Jr, appointing an ethics and disciplinary inspector to investigate alleged discriminatory conduct during Benfica’s Champions League play-off against Real Madrid on 17 February 2026.
UEFA confirmed that the inspector will examine events from the 2025/26 knockout play-off and report on any alleged discriminatory behaviour arising from the match.
UEFA is aware of the report submitted by François Letexier, which outlines Vinicius Jr’s complaints regarding Prestianni.
The inspector will review all facts to determine whether racist comments were made by the Benfica player towards Real Madrid’s number 7. With the process ongoing, Prestianni could be available for the second leg of the play-off.
So far this season for Benfica, Prestianni, valued at 12 million euros, has played 30 competitive matches. That breaks down as 18 in Liga Portugal, seven in the Champions League, two in the Portuguese Cup, two in the League Cup and one in the Super Cup. Across 1,460 minutes, the winger has two goals and one assist.
