UEFA keeps World Cup boycott threat despite FIFA apology | OneFootball

UEFA has kept up the pressure on Gianni Infantino, maintaining its threat to boycott FIFA-organised competitions, including the World Cup, despite an apology after the plan to sell stakes in the tournament was scrapped.

According to L'Équipe, UEFA sent a fresh statement to English media on Thursday in response to FIFA’s apology issued on Wednesday night and the expression of full support for Infantino. UEFA said these changed nothing and that the conditions to lift its threat had not been met.

UEFA set out two demands to end the threat. First, a full withdrawal of any projects to sell stakes in major competitions, including the now-abandoned World Cup plan at the heart of the current crisis. Second, a guarantee that there will never again be attempts to distort the game. It said its boycott stance therefore remains in place.

FIFA on Wednesday published a statement backing its president, saying council members who were present reaffirmed their full support for Gianni Infantino.

It added that apologies had been made for the mistakes, with a commitment to ensure they do not recur. FIFA also stated it would no longer tolerate attacks on its integrity, governance or respect for due process now the project has been shelved.
