UEFA has rejected Real Madrid’s appeal against the sanctions imposed on Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, and Dani Ceballos following the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Atletico Madrid last March, reports MARCA.
The European governing body also upheld a fine imposed on the club over the behaviour of some of its supporters during the match against Arsenal in London.
Rudiger, Mbappe, and Ceballos have been fined €40,000, €30,000, and €20,000 respectively for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct,” as outlined in Article 11.2.b of UEFA’s disciplinary regulations.
The sanctions were issued following a complaint by Atletico Madrid regarding the gestures made by the Real Madrid players at the end of the European derby.
The German defender was sanctioned for placing his hand to his neck, the French forward for gestures deemed provocative towards Atletico fans, and Ceballos for similar conduct.
In addition to the fines, both Rudiger and Mbappe have received one-match bans from UEFA competitions. However, these suspensions have been deferred for one year and will only be enforced in the event of a repeat offence.

In its decision, UEFA stated that there were no grounds to overturn the disciplinary measures issued on 4 April by its Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body.
The official ruling reads: “The appeal submitted by Real Madrid CF is dismissed. Consequently, the decision of the Committee is upheld.”
UEFA also clarified that no disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Vinicihs Jr, despite him also being targeted by opposing fans during that derby.
The same committee has imposed an additional sanction on Real Madrid due to an incident during the first leg of the quarter-final against Arsenal, held on 8 April at the Emirates Stadium.
During the match, a Real Madrid supporter was seen making a Nazi salute, an act UEFA has categorised as racist behaviour under Article 14.2 of its disciplinary code.
As a result, Real Madrid have been fined €15,000 and handed a suspended ban on ticket sales to their supporters for the club’s next UEFA away fixture.
This sanction is subject to a one-year probation and would only be enforced in the case of a repeat offence.
