According to L'Équipe, UEFA is intensifying its push to unseat FIFA president Gianni Infantino, targeting the March 2027 election as the decisive moment.
At Monaco's Méridien Beach Plaza hotel, European powerbrokers mingled with wealthy holidaymakers heading for the pool or private beach. Talk quickly moved past the next day's Champions League draw to a single subject, a crisis at the top of world football and a campaign against Infantino, 56, led by UEFA counterpart Aleksander Ceferin, 58.
The rupture deepened after revelations that the Italo-Swiss leader had sought, for now unsuccessfully, to sell part of World Cup rights to private funds owned by associates of US president Donald Trump. From that point, the Slovenian has gone to war with him.
Ceferin detests Infantino and has no intention of easing off.
Within UEFA, March 2027 is viewed as the chance to try to block his re-election.
