UEFA Women’s Champions League Preview: Real Madrid Femenino vs. VfL Wolfsburg Frauen | OneFootball

The second-placed Frauen-Bundesliga and Liga F sides will lock horns on Tuesday as Real Madrid host VfL Wolfsburg at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. Wolfsburg’s only defeat of the European campaign was on matchday 2 against OL Lyonnes.

Wolfsburg are already qualified for the knockout stage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, but they continue their push for a top-four finish in the last two rounds. Four teams will directly progress to the quarter-final, while the next eight clubs enter an additional knockout phase to complete the last eight.

Lineth Beerensteyn, who is joint-top in the Champions League’s scoring chart alongside Caroline Weir and Alessia Russo with four goals, will return to the side after missing the last couple of Bundesliga games.

Real Madrid climbed to second place in Liga F on the weekend by beating the surprise package Real Sociedad. They’re also in contention for an automatic quarter-final spot with seven points from the first four matchdays. Real Madrid’s only defeat came in the last round against Arsenal.

They were in front at the break thanks to Weir’s superb volley, but Russo’s brace secured a comeback victory for the defending champions. She-Wolves recovered from their loss in Lyon with a five-star performance against Manchester United.

Netherlands duo Ella Peddemors and Beerensteyn scored braces in a 5-2 win for the two-time winners at the Volkswagen Arena. In the process, Stephan Lerch’s side became the first to beat debutants Manchester United in the competition. Weir and Linda Caicedo made their 100th appearances for the club in the last two league games, respectively.

Lerch confirmed that there are no injury worries for the key clash in Madrid. It’ll be the first time Wolfsburg face Real Madrid in women’s football. Wolfsburg will entertain Chelsea, whose 34-game unbeaten run in the WSL ended against Everton on Saturday, when the league phase comes to an end next week.
