Sweden will play England in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 semi-finals, after a late goal eliminated Belgium.

Despite more than 30 efforts at goal, it took Sweden until the 92nd minute to make the breakthrough, in front of 7,500 fans at a soaking wet Leigh Sports Village.

Nicky Evrard got down to save a Filippa Angeldahl shot inside the post and from a swift attack Stina Blackstenius slotted home, only for a VAR check to rule it out.

Amanda Ilestedt headed Kosovare Asllani’s cross onto bar but was offside anyway.

Belgium’s Davina Philtjens survived a VAR check for handball and Evrard came to the rescue again, making a sharp save to keep out a Blackstenius header.

The Red Flames were eventually put out, when Nathalie Bjorn’s shot was blocked on the line and Linda Sembrant hit home the loose ball.

Bramall Lane is the venue for Tuesday’s semi-final between the Swedes and the Lionesses.
