Unai Emery says he is relishing a selection puzzle created by Aston Villa’s centre-back depth, with four options impressing at different stages of the season. Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest saw his rotation come to the fore.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Victor Lindelof, a free signing on last summer’s transfer deadline day, made his 13th Premier League appearance as he returned to the XI. That switch afforded Ezri Konsa, who has played the second-most minutes of any player this season, a rare rest.

Emery said Lindelof is always ready and adds experience, quality and reliable high-level performances. He praised Pau Torres for his consistency, and noted Tyrone Mings felt pain on Saturday, which is why he did not play on Sunday. Konsa, too, has been consistent.

He said he thinks the quartet are producing the level of performance Villa require and that he is very happy with them.

Villa host Bologna on Thursday in a Europa League quarter-final second leg, holding a 3-1 lead from last week’s first leg as they target a second European semi-final in three seasons.
