Aston Villa are expected to welcome back captain John McGinn for Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest.

Forest visit Villa Park at eight pm, leading 1-0 from last week’s first leg at the City Ground after Chris Wood’s penalty.

McGinn did not feature in Sunday’s Premier League defeat to Tottenham, prompting concern he could miss the midweek tie.

"When we are playing matches in a few days like we are playing Thursday, sometimes players aren’t feeling 100 per cent, getting tired, muscular, thinking not completely fit," Unai Emery said. He was speaking to TNT Sports.

"John McGinn, he was confident yesterday but not feeling 100 per cent, so we decided not to take a risk and he’s not going to be involved today."

Emery confirmed the omission was precautionary, with the issue understood to be a tight hamstring.
