Unai Gómez has sustained a bone contusion to the medial condyle of his left knee. According to as.com, an MRI has ruled out ligament damage, and he will be sidelined for between one and four weeks, depending on how the oedema settles. If the absence reaches four weeks, he would not return until after the next break.

He had started on the wing with his usual drive in Saturday night’s meeting with Barça, but an incident near the corner curtailed his outing.

He went to ground in a duel for the ball in minute seven and immediately clutched his left knee.

Athletic’s medical staff treated him quickly, and he was replaced by Robert Navarro after an on-pitch check. He limped off supported by staff, with the problem initially appearing to be a sprain.

A short while later he was seen on crutches on the bench. The La Catedral contest ended in painful fashion for Athletic, Barcelona winning after Lamine found the top corner.
