Unai Núñez, signed in the final week of the winter window to cover centre-back after Mouctar Diakhaby’s season-ending injury, is emerging as a solution at right-back under Carlos Corberán. According to AS, the defender is happy to play wherever he is needed, whether at full-back, centre-back or even up front.
He debuted at Mestalla against Real Madrid in a back five with Tárrega, Cömert, Gayà and Luis Rioja. He shifted to right-back when Valencia attacked, with the winger dropping to help out defensively. He logged 72 minutes and held his own against players such as Mbappé, Arda Güler and Mastantuono.
In the derby with Levante, the absences of Thierry and Foulquier saw Corberán again use him at right-back. He completed the full match, ranked among Valencia’s best performers and showed assurance in defensive actions.
Núñez has inherited the number four shirt from the Guinean and, so far, has featured twice at right-back. He was named in LaLiga’s team of the week for this matchday.
Valencia have a serious problem at right-back and could return to the market because Foulquier faces more than four months out. Several names are under consideration, but one option is already in the squad, with Núñez proving he can cover the role and simply wanting to play, wherever that is.
