Unai Simón is among the leading contenders for the World Cup Golden Glove, sitting just behind Emiliano Martínez. According to as.com, Betfair’s probabilities place Spain’s first-choice goalkeeper narrowly adrift as the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico approaches.

Martínez leads on 11.9% with Simón on 10.8%. Spain are the only nation with three goalkeepers in the top 10, David Raya sixth on 7.4% and Joan García tenth on 2.8%, a combined 21%.

La Roja have won the award before through Iker Casillas at South Africa 2010. Simón’s case is rated ahead of Alisson Becker on 9.9%, Ederson on 8.5% and France’s Mike Maignan on 8.5%.

Luis de la Fuente has kept faith with the Athletic goalkeeper throughout the build-up, despite external pressure. He has started all six matches, with five wins and one draw. Spain collected 16 of 18 points, scored 21 and conceded only two, with five clean sheets.

Simón also started in the most recent Nations League, when Spain reached the final. He was first choice at the Euros in Germany, which La Roja won after beating England 2-1.
