Unai Simón has set the longest run of minutes without conceding in World Cup history, surpassing Walter Zenga's 517. He had already eclipsed Iker Casillas's Spain record of 476 against Austria.
As reported by Superdeporte, the milestone caps a remarkable sequence. The last time he was beaten at a World Cup was in the Qatar group stage, when Spain lost 2-1 to Japan and Tanaka scored in the 51st minute.
Since that defeat, he has kept clean sheets against Morocco, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and Austria.
The goalkeeping role had been a live debate in Spain, with Unai Simón, David Raya and Joan García competing for the shirt. Luis de la Fuente had no doubts and kept faith with Simón, as he did at the Euros and in the Nations League.
Simón has 62 caps, with 48 goals conceded and 27 clean sheets. Those numbers support his selection and reflect the commitment he has shown in recent performances.
