Corinthians Under-20 coach William Batista has praised 17-year-old centre-back Iago Machado’s rapid rise, while urging him to keep his ego in check as attention grows after back-to-back senior starts.
"When you add his technical and physical qualities to a good head and passion for the game and daily work, what Iago can do in his career will be very bright," he told ge.globo.
Machado made his first-team debut on 13 September against Flamengo in the Campeonato Brasileiro, starting with a composed display despite a 2-1 defeat. He kept his place on 20 September versus Fluminense, covering for Gabriel Paulista, out with a medial collateral ligament strain in his right knee.
"Someone like him, who had 7,000 Instagram followers and jumps to 200,000 in a month, if he keeps himself in check, all is fine. It is about looking after ego and vanity, and the media offers around him, so he stays passionate, enjoying it, committed and dedicated."
"He must keep basing his talent on effort, dedication and concentration, on the good person he is, because then expectation will connect with reality. In a few years we could have a centre-back who is everything people glimpsed in those first two games."
During the international break he continues to train with the first team. Corinthians visit Internacional at Beira-Rio on 7 October, a Wednesday, at 19:30 in the 29th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
