Santos have repeatedly failed to protect leads under Cuca, letting advantages slip in seven of his 16 games in charge.
According to Diario Do Peixe, only two of those ended in defeats after a turnaround, against Flamengo at the Maracanã and Fluminense at Vila Belmiro, both in the Brasileiro. The other five finished level, versus Palmeiras at the Allianz and Bahia at Fonte Nova in the league, and in the Sudamericana against Recoleta home and at Rio Parapití, plus San Lorenzo at Vila Belmiro.
Had they seen those matches out, Santos could have banked 10 extra points in the Brasileiro and six more in the Sudamericana. As it stands, they are the first team outside the relegation zone on 18 points, a total that could have been 28 and worth fourth place.
In continental play they are bottom of their group with four points, which could have been 10 and top spot. The tendency to let results slip has also surfaced elsewhere in the season.
There were, however, times when a lead was converted into victory, including against Velo Clube, Remo, Atlético-MG, Bragantino and Coritiba.
Santos also recorded three goalless draws, against Bragantino in the Paulista, Cruzeiro in the Brasileiro and Coritiba in the Copa do Brasil.
