Union Berlin host Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal, having been the only team to take points off Bayern this season in the Bundesliga thanks to their 2-2 draw in early November.

Union Berlin's form in the Bundesliga has been inconsistent as despite positive results against Bayern Munich and St. Pauli in previous weeks, they succumbed to bottom three side Heidenheim on Saturday in a 2-1 loss.

Union are yet to win the DFB-Pokal but did manage to reach the final in 2001 thanks to upsets against Bochum and Borussia Mönchengladbach from the then-third tier side.

Bayern bounced back from their first defeat of the season against Arsenal last week in Champions League with a 3-1 win inspired by late goals from Luis Diaz and Nicholas Jackson in the league.

They currently sit comfortably first in the Bundesliga with an unbeaten record thanks mostly to their huge tally of 44 league goals.

Despite this, Bayern Munich have not been able to make it past the last 16 of the cup since 2022-23 when they played Freiburg in the quarter-finals.

Union Berlin, however, sit in 11th in the Bundesliga due to their loss against Heidenheim which saw them slip down into the bottom half of the table.

Ahead of the tie against Union Berlin, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany said: “Their strength in set-pieces is well-known. They are always a threat from them.”

Team news

Bayern are without Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies still, although Vincent Kompany has said that Davies is “almost ready” to make his return to the squad.

For Union, Robert Skov will continue to be out with injury. Apart from this, Steffen Baumgart has a full squad available for the match.
