Sky Germany reports that Union Berlin were offered the chance to sign former Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling.
The former England winger has been without a club since departing the Premier League side earlier this window by mutual consent.
Die Eisener director of football Horst Heldt confirmed the news to Sky:
“Sometimes you have to rub your eyes. In this case, it didn’t really seem serious. We didn’t pursue it any further.”
Considering that Sterling was on a reported salary of £325k per week, it is quite easy to see why this move was not pursued.
The type of move that signifies the craziness of the later stages of the transfer window. If Union decided to pursue Sterling, it would be similar to their failed Isco move three years ago or Leonardo Bonucci’s forgettable six months in Berlin.
Seeing Sterling play under Steffen Baumgart would have been an interesting sight, as well as how he would fit into a side who are very hard-working and works well as a unit.
