Vincent Kompany was full of praise for Union St Gilloise after they lost 2-0 away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League. As reported by HLN, the former Anderlecht defender said after the game ‘I’m happy with the result, but in the first half, Union played with a lot of courage. They also pushed at the right moments’. In what has become one of the toughest places to visit for any team this year, Union put in a good shift against Bayern Munich, with the score at 0-0 after 45 minutes. Harry Kane then struck twice, and almost had a hat-trick, in what proved to be a decisive 15 minutes following the restart.
Kompany has faced Union a few times during his time as Anderlecht head coach. His opponents, David Hubert, was also realistic following the defeat to Bayern Munich. Hubert said ‘I don’t like losing a board game at home, but I also don’t like losing against the best club in the world. We played a near-perfect first half, executing our game plan with discipline’.
While Bayern Munich are assured of their place in the top eight of the Champions League ahead of their clash with PSV, Union are on the outside looking in. They need to beat Serie A side Atalanta during the final round of matches and hope that other results go their way.
Union were never expected to get a result in Bayern Munich, and plenty would not have seen them having much chance of making it to the next round. However, the side have certainly shown they can compete at Champions League level and will benefit from the experience of playing against lofty opposition like Bayern Munich. They look set for a return to Champions League football next season as they sit on top of the Belgian Pro League. However, Hubert and co would probably prefer not to draw the likes of Bayern Munich next season.
