Union St Gilloise make their Champions League debut this week against PSV. The Belgian champions will travel to Eindhoven to play their first game amongst the European elite. It has been a remarkable rise for the side that were only playing second tier football a few seasons ago. However, one of their key players may not be available. As reported by HLN, former Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess is doubtful for the game. Ahead of the clash, Union St Gilloise’s head coach Sébastien Pocognoli said ‘We’ll have to see how he reacts in the coming days. Christian is our captain and is very important to us. We’ll do our best to get him ready’.

Even with Burgess in and out of the line up this season, Union St Gilloise have started their title defence in great form. The side have not lost any of their seven opening games in the Belgian Pro League, although it took an 87th minute winner to beat bottom side Dender on Saturday.

Ironically, the two sides have already played each other this season. During the preseason, PSV and Union St Gilloise met in a friendly which was won by the Eredivisie side. PSV have had a decent start to their season, with four wins and one defeat from their opening five matches. Their one defeat came in a shock 2-0 loss to newly promoted Telstar.
