Union St Gilloise in discussions with Brighton over Dutch goalkeeper

HLN are reporting that Union St Gilloise are in discussions with sister club Brighton over goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen. The Dutch goalkeeper, who has experience in Belgium with Oostende a few seasons ago, is back in Sussex after a loan spell with Sturm Graz. Union are in need of a goalkeeper after selling long-time number one Anthony Moris to Saudi Arabia. It seems likely that, if the clubs are in discussions, then Scherpen will be offered the chance to return to Belgium to become Union’s number one in their Champions League debut campaign. Brighton are also unlikely to need Scherpen to be part of the squad given the options that they already have in goal.

Since playing seven games for Oostende in 2021/2022, Scherpen has spent the last few seasons out on loan. The tall goalkeeper spent the 2022/2023 campaign with Vitesse in the Eredivisie, before moving to Austria for two years. He helped Sturm Graz in back to back Bundesliga titles in Austria and the Austrian Cup during the 2023/2024 campaign. Most importantly, he would bring some Champions League experience to Union having made eight appearances in the competition so far.
