Union Saint-Gilloise and Inter Milan go head-to-head in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday in what will be a historic first competitive meeting between the two clubs.
The Belgian champions welcome the Italian giants to Lotto Park in Brussels, with both sides looking to strengthen their positions in the new league phase format.
The Brussels-based outfit has undergone significant changes in recent weeks following the departure of championship-winning coach Sébastien Pocognoli to Monaco. His replacement, 37-year-old David Hubert, took charge on October 13.
Crucially for Tuesday’s clash, Austrian forward Raul Florucz returns to availability after serving a European suspension. The 24-year-old has been in excellent form this season with four league goals and will be eager to make an impact against Inter.
Union will also call upon the services of Canadian striker Promise David, who scored a brace in the final game of last season to secure the title. The 23-year-old netted Union’s first-ever Champions League goal from the penalty spot in the opening match at PSV. Alongside him, Senegalese midfielder Ousseynou Niang, formerly of Latvian club Riga FC, has become a key figure in the heart of midfield.
The Italian giants will be without their star striker, Marcus Thuram, for Tuesday’s encounter. The French forward has been sidelined since late September with a thigh injury sustained against Slavia Prague and is targeting a return for next weekend’s crucial clash at Napoli. “Marcus needs a few more days, I don’t know what to tell you,” Chivu confirmed in his pre-match press conference.
Stepping into the breach has been 21-year-old French striker Ange-Yoan Bonny, who has seized his opportunity with both hands. He is set to partner with Lautaro Martinez up front in Tuesday’s clash.
Francesco Acerbi and Alessandro Bastoni complete the defensive trio alongside Manuel Akanji, while Denzel Dumfries and Federico Dimarco provide width from the wing-back positions. In midfield, the experienced trio of Nicolò Barella, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan offer creativity and control.
Inter are also missing Matteo Darmian and backup goalkeeper Raffaele Di Gennaro through injury.
Hubert’s side has responded impressively after that heavy Newcastle defeat and domestic loss to Club Brugge. Their 3-1 win over Charleroi at the weekend featured goals from Florucz, Ousseynou Niang, and Mathias Rasmussen, demonstrating the attacking threat they possess. The Belgian league leaders have won eight of their 11 domestic fixtures and remain unbeaten at home in the Pro League this season.
Before the Newcastle setback, Union had been unbeaten in 10 matches across all competitions. Their confidence-boosting 3-1 victory at PSV on the opening Champions League matchday showcased their potential to compete with Europe’s established powers.
The Nerazzurri are in imperious form, with six consecutive victories propelling them to second position in Serie A, just one point behind their city rivals AC Milan.
This remarkable run includes both Champions League wins and crucial league victories over Sassuolo, Cagliari, Cremonese, and Roma. Inter have conceded just two goals in their last four Serie A matches while scoring nine at the other end.
Chivu’s tactical adjustments have brought renewed energy to the squad, with key players like Barella and Dimarco returning to their best form. The defensive unit has been particularly impressive, keeping clean sheets in four of their last six matches across all competitions.
Union SG: Scherpen; Mac Allister, Burgess, Leysen; Khalaily, Zorgane, Rasmussen, Niang; Ait El Hadj; Florucz, David.
Inter Milan: Sommer; Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Sucic, Calhanoglu, Frattesi, Augusto; Bonny, Martinez.
