Eberechi Eze tore through Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday to score the first Premier League era treble in a north London derby and the 400th ever in the competition - and it got us thinking about other unique hat-trick facts and figures.
If you’ve ever wondered what truly one-of-a-kind hat-trick feats exist in the Premier League statto-sphere, don’t worry: Playmaker has you covered.
It turns out Eze feats are no easy feat… because after digging through the archives, we found only seven other hat-trick moments in Premier League history that have happened once and once only.
There’s no better place to start than with a debut hat-trick.
Out of more than 5,000 players to appear in the Premier League, only one has marked his debut with a hat-trick: Fabrizio Ravanelli. The Italian forward well and truly blew the doors off on the opening day of the 1996–97 season, scoring all three of Middlesbrough’s goals in a chaotic 3–3 draw with Liverpool.
Justin Kluivert is the only player ever to score a hat-trick entirely of penalties in a Premier League match. He pulled it off for Bournemouth in a 4-2 win away at Wolves in November 2024 - a game with a second slice of trivia, too. Kluivert’s teammate Evanilson won all three spot-kicks, making him the only player in Premier League history to win three penalties in a single match.
Only one player has ever scored a hat-trick against the same opponent both home and away in a single Premier League season: Emmanuel Adebayor. The Arsenal striker went on the rampage twice against Derby County in 2007-08, the same campaign in which the Rams recorded the lowest points total in Premier League history (11). It was a rough year for Derby - but Adebayor made the most of it.
A quirk born from the pandemic-delayed season: Anthony Martial is the only player ever to score a Premier League hat-trick in the month of June. With fixtures pushed deep into summer in 2020, the Frenchman struck all three goals in Manchester United’s win over Sheffield United - a once-in-a-lifetime calendar oddity, sealed with a treble.
Luis Suárez remains the only player to score a Premier League hat-trick made up entirely of goals from outside the box. The Uruguayan produced the feat for Liverpool against his favourite victims, Norwich City, in September 2012 - three long-range finishes, one very shell-shocked defence.
Alan Shearer is the Premier League's record goalscorer, so he was always likely to feature in this list somewhere. Shearer scored 11 trebles in total (nine for Blackburn and two for Newcastle), but nothing tops his 1995-96 campaign, when he produced five hat-tricks in a single season.
Erling Haaland (four in 2022–23) and Harry Kane (four in 2016-17) have come closest. Oddly enough, Haaland has been scoring at an unprecedented rate early this season - but he is yet to claim a match ball.
Wigan Athletic’s 5-3 win over Blackburn in December 2007 featured a unique brand of Premier League chaos. Roque Santa Cruz hit a hat-trick to put Rovers 3-2 up, only for Marcus Bent to fire in two late goals for the Latics - adding to his first-half strike - to complete a treble of his own and flip the match for Wigan. It remains the only Premier League game in which players on both sides scored hat-tricks.
