Manchester United suffered a humiliating Carabao Cup exit at Old Trafford, blowing a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton and crash out in the third round.

United raced into a 2-0 lead inside 10 minutes, with Shea Lacey marking his first senior start with a fine finish before Mason Mount struck from the rebound of a blocked Marcus Rashford effort.

However, Brighton quickly turned the game around. Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back just before half-time, before Pascal Gross levelled early in the second half. Substitute Maxim De Cuyper then completed the comeback just four minutes later.

Michael Carrick was forced to bring on captain Bruno Fernandes with 18 minutes remaining, but United could not find a way back. Jason Steele denied Rashford an equaliser, while Karl Darlow kept United in the game with a late save from Diego Gomez.

The result marks United’s first home defeat after leading by two goals since losing 3-2 to Tottenham in 1976, piling further pressure on Carrick after a difficult start to the season.
