Manchester United wrapped up a pretty disappointing season with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on the final day of the Premier League and in doing so, dashed Villa’s hopes of a Champions League spot.
Villa were down to 10 men late in the first half after Emiliano Martínez was shown a red card for barging into Rasmus Hojlund, having rushed out to deal with a dodgy back-pass from Matty Cash.
There was more drama after the break when Morgan Rogers put the ball in the net following a mistake from United keeper Altay Bay?nd?r - but the referee had already blown up for a soft foul on the goalie, and the goal didn’t stand.
Despite being a man down, Unai Emery's side were still on track for the Champions League with Newcastle trailing Everton – until the 76th minute, when Amad Diallo looped a header in from a brilliant cross-field ball by Bruno Fernandes.
Christian Eriksen then made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the closing minutes, marking his final appearance for the club with a goal.
The result means Villa, who reached the Champions League quarter-finals this season, will have to settle for the Europa League next time around.
