Liverpool 4 – 0 Tottenham (4-1 agg) EFL Cup Semifinal 2nd Leg Man of the Match

Mohamed Salah

Despite a couple of wins in Spurs’ last two outings, there was no denying that coming into Anfield for a game under the famous floodlights would have been a daunting challenge for a team decimated by injuries. The slender 0-1 advantage that was carried over from the first leg was always going to be a difficult lead to protect, as the North London club Australian manager, Ange Postecoglou, attempted to overcome the EFL Cup odds and book his club’s place in the Wembley final.

The wants and dreams of the away side were dismissed and dismantled by a superb Liverpool team performance, where every single individual excelled in their task to beat away the Lily Whites. A first-half showing was powerful, whereas the second-half display was sensational. The array of scorers all could havze walked away with the man of the match award, with Virgil commanding his backline and scoring a goal, whilst Cody Gakpo contributed immensely from a wide attacking position.

The continued success of this team is due to a head coach bringing the absolute best out of his team and perhaps the greatest single-season performance from a man who must now be considered the world’s best. Mohamed Salah was unplayable and as either a creator or goal scorer he is quickly becoming unmatched in the game. The continual deliveries from an outside to in movement was absurd and with his teammates eagerly awaiting the next great cross or pass into the box, he must be the perfect offensive teammate. The variety of passes and intricacies of his game are a revelation even after so many years as a red, with the notion that he is somehow improving with age.

The penalty to all but close out the tie was perfection in execution, as he strode about his Anfield pitch like the Egyptian King he has truly become. The superlatives are endless and hopefully, the extended contract is incoming as this performance only solidified the absolute need to see the record-breaking goal-getter in Liverpool red for many seasons to come.

Next up is an FA Cup a trip to Plymouth at the weekend, where only the fringe and academy graduates are allowed to participate. Greatness must be protected as the biggest silverware in world football may just be headed to Merseyside.

Steven Smith’s Pre-match Prediction;
