Unusual detail: Manuel Neuer runs up with special glove

Manuel Neuer is currently attracting attention not only with his performances, but also with his equipment. In the last two games, the Bayern goalkeeper has worn a special glove.

A specially made model has recently been used on his left hand, which initially went unnoticed by many. The special glove connects the ring finger and the little finger – a measure to protect against a capsule injury that Neuer has apparently sustained.

The design was first noticed during the game in London against Arsenal FC, where it was already apparent that two fingers were together in an extended compartment. The glove was then adjusted again during the game against St. Pauli. This is a common method used by professional goalkeepers to ensure stability without completely restricting mobility.

The special model could be used again in the cup round of 16 against Union Berlin. Coach Vincent Kompany announced: „Manu will be back in goal.“ There had previously been discussions as to whether Jonas Urbig would get minutes in the cup.

No end to the discussions about Neuer

But despite being guaranteed a start, the public debate surrounding the Bayern captain continues. The 39-year-old has made several mistakes in recent weeks – he has looked unusually unsure of himself, especially when dealing with high balls and set-pieces. One goal against Arsenal was conceded after a missed intervention at a corner, another was due to him running out of his goal too quickly. In the match against St. Pauli, he allowed the equaliser to pass into his short corner.

Despite the growing criticism, the club has Neuer’s back. Substitute keeper Jonas Urbig will not get a chance to play for the time being. Kompany emphasised: „There will come a time when we will always look to see how we can get Jonas minutes – Manu knows that, Jonas knows that. But timing? I don’t have a calendar or anything where I say: this game and this game.“

It is unclear whether the special glove can stabilize Neuer’s performance or has perhaps even influenced it. The goalkeeper will certainly continue to be closely monitored in the coming weeks.
