Bayern Munich’s French duo Dayot Upamecano and Michael Olise will now refocus on this summer’s World Cup with France after Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
Upamecano was withdrawn in the 85th minute for Lennart Karl. According to L'Équipe, he seemed puzzled, asking Vincent Kompany for clarification as he came off. After a mixed display, he largely avoided heavy criticism from German media and pundits, unlike his compatriot.
Olise left the Allianz Arena near midnight with hood up and head down. Minutes later Upamecano looked less downcast, leaving arm in arm with Ousmane Dembélé and other PSG players after a goal from his friend from Évreux, their exchanges lasting several minutes.
Former Bayern player Mario Basler, now a Sport 1 pundit, felt Olise disappeared after the interval and judged it his poorest outing since joining the club.
Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness compared Olise’s profile to Arjen Robben but said the second leg showed he still has room to improve, needing more consistency and maturity. He noted the winger is 23 and urged patience, while his overall season has been excellent.
The pair can fully turn to France duty on 24 May, the day after the German Cup final against VfB Stuttgart at Berlin’s Olympiastadion. Before then Bayern face two Bundesliga games, at Wolfsburg on Saturday and against Cologne on 16 May. The 23 May showpiece offers a chance to add a second trophy and head to Clairefontaine in buoyant mood.
