Johannes Hoff Thorup didn't achieve the short-term goals and met a ruthless end

Johannes Hoff Thorup's removal as Norwich City manager came as somewhat of a surprise to some, even though the Canaries are on course for their worst league finish in seven seasons.

Per Nick Mashiter, the decision to sack Thorup as manager was driven by the new ownership at Carrow Road, with the Canaries now owned by American Mark Attanasio, who ended Delia Smith's and Michael Wynn Jones' near 30-year spell as owners in October, with the ratification process ending in March.

Attanasio had a second successive top-six finish in mind when he put forward his takeover plans, and still hopes to make Norwich a Premier League side in three to five years. Ultimately, he saw this season as a failure, and Thorup was sacked as a result.

Jack Wilshere will take charge of the final two games of the season. Whilst he may have been groomed to be Thorup's successor, reports state that it may be too early for him.

Reason behind Johannes Hoff Thorup's sacking revealed

According to Nick Mashiter on X, "Norwich decision [to sack Thorup was] driven by American owners and not something which was foreseen last night".

"Top six was the target. Club brought in good ££ last summer but reinvested a lot to go backwards", he continued.

Norwich received over £20 million for midfielder Gabriel Sara and around £9.5 million for Adam Idah; however, main arrivals this season, such as Ante Crnac and Amankwah Forson, haven't set the league alight, and winter arrival Mataj Jurasek has played just twice in the league since he joined from Slavia Prague.

Ultimately, alongside losing their main creative outlet in Sara, this season has been one of regression for Norwich. Six defeats in their last eight have them on course for a bottom-half finish, with the Canaries currently sitting a whole 20 points behind their tally that saw them sneak sixth last season.

Many saw this season as one of transition, with Thorup looking to settle in at Norwich before making a splash next season. In the end, the new American ownership seems a lot more cut-throat, with a demand for short-term success.

Perhaps too early for Jack Wilshere to become full-time manager

Jack Wilshere will take charge of Norwich's final two games, away at Middlesbrough and home at Cardiff, as Mark Attanasio and the rest of the board at Carrow Road search for a new manager.

There's potential for Wilshere to become the permanent boss, but the likelihood is that he'll remain in the backroom for the time being, with the view of progressing to the main role soon enough.

The earlier report stated that: "[Jack] Wilshere was partly brought in to be groomed as successor, but could be too early."

Wilshere's only managerial experience comes from the Arsenal academy, before he made the move to Norwich as a first-team coach.

The 33-year-old will likely be in line for a main dugout role in the EFL at some point over the coming years, but don't expect that it will come this soon in his coaching career, especially as Attanasio will be looking to bring in someone seasoned to mount a serious promotion charge in what will be Norwich's fourth successive season in the second tier.
