While Germany's dramatic late win over Ivory Coast sparked scenes of celebration among fans and players alike, there was also a major cause for concern: Defender Nico Schlotterbeck was forced off at half-time after suffering an injury, casting doubt over his availability for the remainder of the World Cup.

Following an initial examination at the stadium, Germany's medical staff reportedly suspect that the Borussia Dortmund centre-back has sustained ligament damage in his ankle.

A definitive diagnosis is expected after Schlotterbeck undergoes an MRI scan at Germany's team base in Winston-Salem. Should the worst fears be confirmed, the tournament could be over for the 26-year-old.

Such a setback would represent a significant blow for Julian Nagelsmann's side. Schlotterbeck has been a key figure in Germany's defence and his absence would further deplete the squad ahead of the knockout stages.

Germany have already been dealing with injury concerns elsewhere in the squad, and Schlotterbeck could become the second established starter to miss the remainder of the tournament after Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl were ruled out.

If Schlotterbeck is sidelined, most observers expect Antonio Rüdiger to step into the starting lineup. The Real Madrid defender replaced Schlotterbeck at half-time against Ivory Coast and delivered a composed performance as Germany secured a crucial 2-1 victory.
